A Celebration of Resilience

ArtNest Residency will present a celebration of the late Remmy Ongala, the legendary Tanzanian musician, on February 10, 2021, Mr. Ongala’s birthday. This celebration will feature speeches from refugees living in Johannesburg who knew Mr. Ongala personally, and will culminate with a devised group dance set to Mr. Ongala’s music. This celebration will take place at Yeoville St. Francis Park, and will be filmed and distributed electronically for free worldwide, as a celebration of the resilience of the refugee community.

From the AD

“Remmy Ongala is one of my musical heroes,” says ArtNest’s Artistic Director, Paul Wairoma. “ArtNest wishes to honor his life, and to use his music as inspiration for those who have left their homes to create their lives again here in Johannesburg. We will show the world that refugees are not weak, but resilient, and use the power of music to advocate for social justice.”

Remmy Ongala was known for using his music as a social instrument, addressing issues such as poverty, AIDS/HIV, and the abolition of racism and social injustice.
